Entering answers in scientific notation in reports

The following list shows the different ways you can enter answers formatted in scientific notation.

  • Using E or e with no spaces
    • 1.23E-4
    • 1.23e-4
  • Using x10 (the letter x) with or without spaces
    • 1.23x10^-4
    • 1.23 x 10^-4
  • Using an asterisk
    • 1.23*10^-4
    • 1.23 * 10^-4
  • Using the times symbol
    • 1.23×10^-4
    • 1.23 × 10^-4
  • Using the minus symbol
    • 1.23 x 10^−4
    • 1.23 * 10^4
    • 1.23 × 10^−4
  • Positive exponents with or without plus sign
    • 1.23E4
    • 1.23E+4
    • 1.23 x 10^4
    • 1.23 x 10^+4


Not accepted

The following formats are not accepted as properly formatted scientific notation. If you format your answer in any of the following ways, it will be marked wrong.

  • Using a space when entering using E
    • 1.23 E-4 or 1.23 e-4
    • 1.23E -4 or 1.23e -4
  • Using the caret with E
    • 1.23E^-4 or 1.23e^-4
  • Using an x or * with E
    • 1.23 x E-4 or 1.23 x e-4
    • 1.12 * E-4 or 1.23 *e-4
  • Putting the minus sign after the exponent
    • 1.23 x 10^4- or 1.23*10^4-
    • 1.23E4- or 1.23e4-

There are many more examples of improperly formatted scientific notation, these are just a few examples of answers that will be marked wrong.
