Overview of the Questions tab

When you open a quiz prior to students starting it, you will have the capability to modify what questions are included in the quiz, the order the questions are presented, and the points assigned for each question.

Here is a screenshot of the Questions tab with areas of interest described below.

  1. Scoring information. Shows the total points based on the points for each question in the quiz and then the scaled score for the quiz. Scaled scores are what show up in the grade book.
  2. Shuffle. When selected, the order of the questions in the quiz will be randomized for each student. Once students start a quiz, you cannot change this checkbox.
  3. Add menu. Includes options for adding a new question or new question pool to the quiz. Once students start a quiz, this menu is disabled.
  4. List view|Question preview toggle. Changes the question list between a list and a preview of the question. The preview includes the question, feedback for incorrect answers, the answer to the question, and the solution.
  5. Question selection checkboxes. Select all or specific questions in the quiz. Once questions are selected, you have options to create a question pool, move, or remove questions. Once students start a quiz, you are limited on what you can do with selected questions.
  6. Move. Click and drag on the move target to reorder the questions in the quiz. Once students start a quiz, you cannot change the order of the questions.
  7. Question information. Displays the name of the question, the type of question, and the first line of the question prompt.
  8. Points. Displays the points for the question. You can edit the points for the question at any time. After points are edited, student responses are rescored to account for the updated points assigned to the question.
  9. Actions menu. Options include preview, move question to/from question pool, and delete question from quiz. Once students start a quiz, the options available are limited.

Opening a quiz in progress

Once students have started working on a quiz, most features and functions to edit the question list need to be disabled. You will see a yellow banner under the scoring information with a notice of how many students have begun the quiz. If you really need to edit the quiz, you will need to go to the Results tab and delete the attempts for the students who have started the quiz. Once all active attempts are deleted, you will be able to make changes on the Questions tab.
